Manipur Progressive Secular Alliance
details

The Manipur Progressive Secular Alliance (MPSA) is a political alliance in Manipur, India. It was formed on 17 June 2020 by the Indian National Congress (INC), the National People's Party (NPP), the BJP, the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)), and the Kuki National Organisation (KNO).

The MPSA was formed in response to the growing popularity of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Manipur. The INC, the NPP, and the BJP were all concerned that the BJP would win the 2022 Manipur Legislative Assembly election if they remained separate.

The MPSA has an 18-point Common Agenda, which includes commitments to secularism, social justice, and economic development. The alliance also supports the implementation of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) in Manipur.

The MPSA won 32 seats in the 2022 Manipur Legislative Assembly election, making it the second-largest alliance in the state. The BJP won 32 seats, and the Naga People's Front (NPF) won 20 seats.

The MPSA is currently in the opposition in the Manipur Legislative Assembly. The alliance is led by Okram Ibobi Singh, who is the former Chief Minister of Manipur.

The future of the MPSA is uncertain. The alliance is facing increasing pressure from the BJP, which is the ruling party in Manipur. However, the MPSA has shown resilience in the past, and it is possible that the alliance will be able to survive the current challenges.

Here are some of the key features of the Manipur Progressive Secular Alliance:

  • It is a five-party alliance, consisting of the INC, the NPP, the BJP, the JD(U), and the KNO.
  • The INC is the largest party in the alliance, with 17 seats in the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
  • The NPP is the second-largest party in the alliance, with 12 seats in the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
  • The BJP is the third-largest party in the alliance, with 10 seats in the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
  • The JD(U) is the fourth-largest party in the alliance, with 1 seat in the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
  • The KNO is the fifth-largest party in the alliance, with 2 seats in the Manipur Legislative Assembly.
  • The alliance is led by Okram Ibobi Singh, who is the former Chief Minister of Manipur.
  • The alliance is supported by several other political parties, including the CPI(M), the CPI, and the Forward Bloc.

The Manipur Progressive Secular Alliance is a significant political development in Manipur. The alliance has the potential to bring about positive change in the state, but it will face some challenges in the years to come.
