Delhi Tremors as 4.4 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Haryana, Residents Say “Longest in Life”
Strong tremors were felt across Delhi, the National Capital Region (NCR), and parts of western Uttar Pradesh this morning as an earthquake of magnitude 4.4 struck Jhajjar district in Haryana at a depth of 10 km, according to the National Institute of Seismology.
The quake occurred at 9:04 AM, prompting residents in Delhi, Noida, and Gurugram to rush out of homes and offices as household items and office equipment shook visibly. Tremors were also reported from Rohtak, Bahadurgarh, Dadri, and as far as Meerut and Shamli in western UP, about 200 km from the epicenter.
Many residents took to social media, calling it the “longest tremor” they had ever experienced.

The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) urged people to remain calm, use stairs instead of elevators while exiting buildings, and pull over safely if driving during a quake.
Delhi, located in Seismic Zone 4, has a higher risk of earthquakes because of its proximity to active fault lines — including the Delhi-Haridwar Ridge, Sohna Fault, and Mahendragarh-Dehradun Fault — caused by the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates colliding.
The city has experienced at least five earthquakes above magnitude 5.5 since 1720.
