Gautam Gambhir’s “Ab To Retire Ho Gaya” Comment On Rohit Sharma Goes Viral
During a lighthearted appearance on the Kapil Sharma Show, India head coach Gautam Gambhir made a cheeky remark about Rohit Sharma that has since gone viral on social media.
The episode featured Gambhir alongside Rishabh Pant and Yuzvendra Chahal. At one point, host Kapil Sharma asked:
"In most families there is a jethani (dominant elder), who is such a player in the team, someone who orders everyone around by virtue of seniority?"
Rishabh Pant quickly responded:
"Rohit bhai is like that."
To which Gambhir added with a smile:
"Maine kaha, Rohit ka naam lele, ab toh retire ho gaya (Take Rohit’s name, he’s retired now)."
The comment drew laughter and was made in good humor. Notably, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have stepped away from Test and T20I cricket, playing only ODIs now. The current Indian squad touring England is relatively young, with KL Rahul as the most experienced member.
Team Bonding Tradition Returns
Ahead of the 2nd Test against England at Edgbaston, captain Shubman Gill and head coach Gambhir reinstated the tradition of hosting a team dinner — an effort to build camaraderie among players. Such events had reportedly been absent during Rohit’s tenure as Test captain, with Gambhir previously voicing concerns over the team’s lack of cohesion during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia.
With a younger team and new leadership, the aim is to foster unity and team spirit going forward.
