India Records 752 New COVID-19 Cases in a Week, Active Caseload Crosses 1,000

India has reported a noticeable uptick in COVID-19 cases, with 752 new infections recorded over the past week. This brings the active case count to over 1,000, sparking discussions among health experts and triggering precautionary measures in some states.

The rise in cases coincides with the emergence of two new sub-variants of the virusNB.1.8.1 and LF.7—which are currently being monitored by global health authorities.

Kerala and Karnataka See Spike in Cases

Kerala remains the worst-affected state, contributing 335 new cases, raising its active caseload to 430.

Meanwhile, Karnataka recorded 36 positive cases, pushing its active count to 100. The state’s 24-hour positivity rate stands at 9.44%, with 381 total tests conducted, out of which 361 were RT-PCR tests.

What Are the New COVID Variants: NB.1.8.1 and LF.7?

While details are still emerging, both sub-variants—NB.1.8.1 and LF.7—have shown signs of increased transmissibility, though no major red flags regarding severity have been reported so far.

Health officials and researchers globally are closely monitoring the behavior, mutation pattern, and potential risk associated with these variants. At this point, no travel restrictions or lockdowns have been announced.

Government Response: Mask Advisory and Precautionary Measures

Karnataka Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil assured the public that the situation is under control, but caution is necessary. He announced that:

  • Doctors and healthcare workers are advised to wear masks again.

  • Pregnant women and vulnerable groups should also take preventive measures.

  • The state government is fully prepared with medical infrastructure in place.

"There’s no need for panic," said Patil. “But we urge people to cooperate with the government and follow safety guidelines.”

Should You Be Worried?

While the numbers are not alarming compared to previous COVID waves, the appearance of new variants and the rising trend in cases indicate that the virus is still evolving.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Stay informed through official health bulletins.

  • Use masks in crowded or closed environments, especially if you're elderly or immunocompromised.

  • Get vaccinated or receive booster doses as per government advisories.

  • Avoid spreading misinformation and follow verified updates.

Final Thoughts: Stay Safe, Stay Prepared

The COVID-19 pandemic taught us the value of preparedness and public cooperation. While India’s healthcare system is now stronger and more experienced in handling outbreaks, the responsibility of keeping infections low lies with each one of us.

Let’s not panic—but let’s not ignore the signs either.
