India-Pakistan Tensions Escalate: Heavy Shelling Along Line of Control in Kashmir
details

Tensions between India and Pakistan have escalated dramatically, with heavy artillery exchanges reported along the Line of Control (LoC) dividing Indian-administered and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. This comes after deadly cross-border attacks that have claimed the lives of dozens of civilians and soldiers on both sides.

Artillery Fire Intensifies After Deadly Strikes

On May 8, Pakistani officials reported that at least 31 people were killed and several others wounded after what they described as an Indian military strike on areas in Punjab province and Pakistan-administered Kashmir. In response, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif vowed retaliation, stating, “We will avenge the blood of our innocent martyrs.”

India, on the other hand, claimed that the action—called Operation Sindoor—was aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure it alleges was operating along the LoC. Indian reports confirmed at least 13 deaths in Indian-administered Kashmir due to retaliatory fire from Pakistan.

What Triggered the Conflict?

This latest confrontation follows a deadly attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir, on April 22, which India blamed on Pakistan-based militant groups. Pakistan has denied involvement, calling the allegations baseless.

The region has remained volatile since then, but the situation took a critical turn with today's shelling and airstrikes, which are now being seen as some of the most intense exchanges since the 2019 Pulwama-Balakot episode.

Operation Sindoor: India’s Perspective

Indian authorities stated that Operation Sindoor specifically targeted launch pads and militant safe havens across the border. Indian media reported “precision strikes” with the goal of neutralizing groups allegedly responsible for the April 22 Pahalgam incident.

Indian defense sources claim the operation was “measured and intelligence-driven,” while also emphasizing that efforts were made to avoid civilian areas.

Pakistan’s Response and Civilian Casualties

Pakistan, however, described the Indian strikes as a “blatant act of war”, stating that missiles had hit mosques and residential areas, resulting in significant civilian casualties. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad condemned the attacks and warned of “serious consequences”.

Prime Minister Sharif’s remarks have heightened concern internationally, with his statement clearly indicating that military retaliation is under consideration.

Global Reaction and Fears of Escalation

As both India and Pakistan are nuclear-armed nations, any escalation in armed conflict raises serious international alarm. The United Nations and major global powers have issued calls for restraint and dialogue.

What Happens Next?

With border tensions running high and inflammatory rhetoric from both sides, the possibility of further escalation remains real. Analysts are urging de-escalation efforts and a return to diplomatic channels before the situation spirals further out of control.
