Delhi High Court Protects Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev’s Personality Rights from AI Misuse

In a landmark ruling, the Delhi High Court has passed an interim order safeguarding the personality and publicity rights of Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev, the renowned spiritual leader and founder of the Isha Foundation, amid increasing misuse of his identity through AI-generated content.

What the Court Said

The court observed that several rogue websites and social media platforms had used Artificial Intelligence to manipulate Sadhguru’s voice, image, videos, and likeness — all for unauthorized commercial gain. The judgment highlighted the alarming trend of AI misuse to infringe on individual privacy and intellectual property rights.

“If not stopped, such content will spread like wildfire... with hardly any water left to douse it,” the court warned.

Immediate takedown of infringing content from YouTube and other platforms.
Suspension of accounts and disclosure of basic subscriber details of the infringing parties.
Directive to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and Ministry of Electronics and IT (MeitY) to block rogue websites and social media accounts.
Acknowledgment of Sadhguru’s unique personality traits, including his voice, name, signature, appearance, and style of articulation.

A Growing AI Threat to Public Figures

The court noted that AI technology, while innovative, is increasingly being used for identity theft and reputational damage. These platforms, often labeled as “hydra-headed websites”, can resurface under new domains even after being blocked.

“They perfectly mask their registration/contact details, making legal recourse difficult,” the court added.

This decision is being seen as a major step in safeguarding digital identity rights in India, particularly as AI tools become more accessible. It sets a precedent for other public figures, influencers, and spiritual leaders whose likenesses may be misused in deepfakes, synthetic media, and manipulated voice content.
