India vs Bangladesh, T20 World Cup 2024 Warm-Up Hi
June 15, 2025
In the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 innocent lives on April 22, 2025, India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir has made a bold and emotional statement: no cricketing ties with Pakistan — not even at neutral venues — until terrorism ends.
Speaking at an ABP event in Delhi, Gambhir said:
“My personal answer to this is absolutely no. Till all this [terrorism] doesn't stop, there should not be anything between India and Pakistan.”
The terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, shocked the nation and led to swift retaliatory measures by the Indian government:
Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty
Closure of the Attari border crossing
Downgrading of diplomatic ties with Pakistan
These responses underline the seriousness with which the Indian government views continued cross-border terrorism.
India and Pakistan haven't played a bilateral cricket series since January 2013. The two sides now only meet in multinational tournaments such as:
ICC Champions Trophy
Asia Cup
World Cups (ODI & T20)
Most recently, the teams faced off in the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy in Dubai. However, the upcoming women's ODI World Cup, men’s Asia Cup, and T20 World Cup 2026 may once again bring them together — unless political tensions prevent it.
Gambhir emphasized the priority of national security over any sports or entertainment activities:
“No cricket match or Bollywood movie is more important than the life of Indian soldiers and citizens. Matches will keep happening. But nothing is worth more than human lives.”
When asked about the future of senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for the England Test tour in June, Gambhir clarified:
Coaches do not select squads, only playing elevens.
Decisions about selection rest with the selectors, not the coach.
As long as a player performs, age should not matter — even playing till 45 is fine.

Gautam Gambhir’s strong stance reflects a larger sentiment in the country — that national security and the lives of citizens must come before cricket diplomacy. As India continues to grapple with the aftershock of the Pahalgam tragedy, whether or not to continue sporting ties with Pakistan remains a question for both the BCCI and the Indian government.
