Jignesh Mevani
details

  • Early life and education: Jignesh Mevani was born on December 11, 1980, in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. He is a Dalit, and his family comes from the village of Meu in Mehsana district. Mevani studied at the Swastik Vidyalaya and Vishwa Vidyalay Madhaymik Shala in Ahmedabad. He then went on to study law at the Gujarat University.
  • Activism: Mevani began his activism as a journalist, writing about caste discrimination and injustice. In 2016, he co-founded the Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch (RDAM), a Dalit rights organization. He has also been a vocal critic of the Gujarat government, and has been arrested several times for his activism.
  • Political career: Mevani was elected to the Gujarat Legislative Assembly in 2017 as an independent candidate. He later joined the Indian National Congress party.
  • Controversies: Mevani has been involved in several controversies, including his arrest in 2017 for allegedly making inflammatory speeches against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He has also been criticized for his association with Hardik Patel, a Patidar leader who has been accused of making inflammatory speeches against the Patel community.

Despite the controversies, Mevani remains a popular figure among Dalits and other marginalized communities in Gujarat. He is seen as a symbol of resistance against caste discrimination and injustice.

In 2022, Mevani was arrested by the Assam Police on charges of sedition and promoting enmity between religious groups. He was released on bail after spending 23 days in jail.

Mevani's arrest sparked widespread protests across India, and many people saw it as an attempt to silence his voice. The charges against him were eventually dropped, but the incident highlighted the challenges that Dalit activists face in India.

Mevani is a controversial figure, but there is no doubt that he is a powerful voice for Dalit rights. He is a fearless advocate for the marginalized, and he is not afraid to speak truth to power. His work is essential to building a more just and equitable society in India.
